A humpback whale reaches the coastal waters of Tahiti after roughly 6,000 kilometres of open ocean, having eaten almost nothing for months. Megaptera novaeangliae spends the austral summer feeding on Antarctic krill, then turns north toward French Polynesia to breed and calve.
The animals that arrive here belong to the Oceania subpopulation, listed as endangered and numbering in the low thousands. In 2002 the territory declared its entire exclusive economic zone — close to five million square kilometres — a marine mammal sanctuary, among the largest protected areas of its kind on earth.
